2017考研英语词汇：熟词僻意（3）

以J和K开头的单词数量不多，具有熟词僻意的单词更少，但是这类单词的含义非常多。不过，在研究生考试中，考察的含义比较有限，几乎就集中在下列的熟意和僻意中。

1. joint

熟意：关节。

僻意：连接，结合。

例句：Thats because Congress has always envisioned joint federal-state immigration enforcement and explicitly encourages state officers to share information and cooperate with federal colleagues.(2013年 Text 4) 因为国会一直以来的愿景是把联邦移民执法机关联合起来，并且很明显地鼓励各州政府官员共享信息并与联邦的同事合作。

2. jump

熟意：跳跃。

僻意：(飞快地，急速地)上升。

例句： In 1973 commodity prices jumped by 70%, and in 1979 by almost 30%.(2001年 Text 4)在1973年日用品的价格飞涨了70%，在1979年几乎涨了30%。

Even demographics are working against the middle class family， as the odds of having a weak elderly parent- and all the attendant need for physical and financial assistance have jumped eightfold in just one generation.(2007年 Text 3)甚至人口统计数据也显示中产阶级家庭困难重重，有老弱父母的家庭需要的看护人员和资金支持在一代人之间上升了八倍。

3. justice

熟意：公平，正义。

僻意：法官。

例句：Last April, for example the justices signaled that too many patents were being upheld for inventions that are obvious not. 例如去年4月， 法官暗示太多明显不是发明的专利被认定为发明。(2010年 text 2)

The ethical judgments of the Supreme Court justices have become an important issue recently. (2011年 完型填空)近来对于最高法院的法官的道德评价成了一项重要的话题。

4. just

熟意：刚刚，只是。

僻意：公平的。

例句：The sentence You might tolerate the odd road-hog... the rule. (Para. 1) implies that ________. (1992年 text 1)第一段中的句子你有可能容忍了那些在路上乱蹿乱撞的司机规则暗示了________。

[A] our society is unjust towards well-mannered motorists 我们的社会对于那些态度好的摩托骑手不公平。

[B] rude drivers can be met only occasionally 偶然会碰到态度粗暴的司机

[C] the well-mannered motorist cannot tolerate the road-hog 态度好的摩托骑手不能容忍乱蹿的司机。

[D] nowadays impolite drivers constitute the majority of motorists 现在大多数的摩托骑手是不礼貌的。

5. knock

熟意：敲击，撞击。

僻意：(多数与介词搭配)击败，震惊。

例句：On a five to three vote,the Supreme Court knocked out much of Arizonas immigration law Monday-a modest policy victory for the Obama Aministration. (2013年 Text 4)以5比3的优势， 最高法院在周一否决了亚利桑那州的移民法案， 对于奥巴马政府来说这是一个不足道的政策上的胜利。

But as Cline is the first to note, it took Beaumont decades to perfect her craft; her example cant be knocked off. (2013年 text 1)但是正如Cline第一次注意到的那样，Beaumont花了数十年来精进技艺，所以她的例子不具备参考价值。

讲解：knock off表示停止做某事，复制的含义，在这里是复制。文中我们不能复制Beaumont的例子，也就是没有参考价值。
